The benefits of Dhikr

Remembrance of Allah, also known as dhikr or zikr, is an essential pillar of our faith and religious practice. It is therefore essential to turn to our Lord daily, to meditate on His Greatness, His Generosity, and His infinite Grace. But do we really know the merits and profound benefits associated with this sacred practice? We will explore these benefits by referring to the work of Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyya, entitled “The Merits of Remembrance of Allah”.

One of the most significant virtues of remembering Allah is the distance it creates between us and Satan. By praising Our Lord, the enemy of Allah distances himself from us. As the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) reported in a hadith transmitted by At-Tirmidhy: “I advise you to invoke the Name of Allah. The image of the invoker is that of a man who is chased by his enemies at great speed, but who nevertheless manages to find refuge in a fortress; similarly, the servant cannot take shelter from Satan except by the dhikr of Allah.” Thus, by invoking the Name of our Lord, let us distance ourselves from the Evil One and benefit from divine protection.

Moreover, remembering Allah protects us from the punishment of Allah, because although He is Most Merciful, Allah is also Just and punishes those who transgress His commandments. As Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) taught: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'To protect himself from the punishment of Allah, the son of Adam does nothing more salutary than the dhikr of Allah.' By remembering our Lord, we protect ourselves from the punishment of Allah, an inestimable blessing.

Moreover, the remembrance of our Creator is an act highly appreciated by Allah. By invoking His Name, He elevates us in degrees. As reported by At-Tirmidhy, Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Shall I not teach you the noblest deed that you can do and the purest in the sight of your Sovereign? This deed is the highest degree that you can attain and it will be more precious to you than gold and silver. It will be more beneficial for you than fighting your enemies and defeating them or being dominated by them." The Companions replied: "Indeed, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) concluded: "The dhikr of Allah." Thus, the remembrance of Allah is a source of blessing and spiritual elevation for those who devote themselves to it with devotion.

Furthermore, the benefits of remembering Allah are numerous, although we will mention only a few. It is important to know that by calling upon Our Lord, He answers our call. As He states in the Quran: “Call upon Me, and I will answer you.” (Surah 2: Verse 152). This divine promise is of incomparable beauty; we only need to call upon Allah for Him to answer us, thus testifying to His nearness and infinite mercy. Similarly, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) teaches us that Our Creator says: “Whoever calls upon Me within himself, I call upon him within Myself, and whoever calls upon Me publicly, I call upon him publicly in a better way.” What an immense reward it is to be called upon by Allah Himself!

Moreover, the one who praises Allah receives gifts far greater than those he asks for. As reported by 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever devotes himself so much to the remembrance of My Name that it distracts him from asking Me for what he wants, I will bestow on him more than what I give to those who ask Me." This divine generosity is a manifestation of Allah's infinite love and compassion towards His servants.

Finally, the one who remembers Allah will have blessings in Paradise. As narrated by At-Tirmidhi, Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “Whoever says: ‘Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him’, will have a palm tree planted for him in Paradise.” What a magnificent reward for the one who devotes himself to the remembrance of Our Lord!

In summary, the remembrance of Allah is a practice of inestimable value for the believers. In addition to keeping Satan away, protecting us from divine punishment and raising us in ranks in the sight of Allah, it also ensures us a divine response to our calls, generous gifts from Our Creator, and eternal blessings in Paradise. May Allah grant us steadfastness in the remembrance of His Name, and reward us in the Hereafter for our devotion and love for Him.
